DRY EYE SYNDROME - (DES)

People usually think that sandy, red, burning, watering eyes and blurry vision are just part of life. In fact they are often a collection of symptoms due to an imbalance in the quantity or quality in the tears called dry eye syndrome (DES). DES is caused by many factors. Aging, hormonal changes, disease, medications, contact lens, air conditioning, heating and computer use.

In addition to the standard drops for lubrication there are new drops and gels that remain in the eye longer, vitamins that restore moisture to the eyes, and plugs to retain moisture.

A perscription eye drop called restasis has proven to be effective in the treatment of dry eye disease. This is a step forward as we are now able to treat the cause of the problem with a drug, not just the symptom with a lubricating drop.
